Firstly, Active Africa is not a tour operator - we do not offer set itineraries or run our own departures under the Active Africa banner. In fact, our brand is rarely seen in the field; rather we adopt and protect the brand integrity of our clients.

Established in 2001, the company was the joint venture of two friends who wanted to combine their passion for walking, climbing and trekking with the lifestyle offered by the tourism industry. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, the company initially operated a variety of walking, trekking and adventure programs within Southern Africa. By 2006, under sole ownership, we had focused our efforts on an area that was keeping us extremely busy - guiding and tour leading. This led to the evolution of Active Africa as it is today, a tourism resource providing guiding services and tour operator representation to tour operators and independent travellers worldwide.

Who is Active Africa now?

Owner Chris Goodwin would describe the 'who' of Active Africa as a database of exceptional guides; but we are so much more than that, with many years of collective tourism consulting, guiding and tour leading experience in Africa and worldwide. Whether your interest is a cultural exchange with a remote African community, savouring the culinary art of the best chefs, touching ancient wilderness on a classic African safari, cycling through desert landscapes or ascending the icy summit of Kilimanjaro, all of our guides are intimately familiar with Africa, offering expert leadership and local knowledge that only comes from personal experience.

Why use us?

The simple answer is that we are all guides and since we are effectively our product, we have a direct interest in the tours with which we assist. This means that whether you are a tour operator or an independent traveller, the guide who works with you during your tour, will also be the person who assists you with preparations before the tour. Since we are all independent contractors, we are able to offer you an entirely transparent cost structure. And because we will be the people on the ground during your tour, we will ensure that your itineraries offer the best experience without undue time constraints or operational hitches.
