Kenya

Active Africa guides lead safari focused trips to National Parks and Reserves in Kenya, our involvement in community based projects in these areas creating opportunities for unique cultural exchanges.  Not restricted to safari, we have trekked the alpine ridges of Mount Kenya, including technical ascents of its icy summits, cycled and walked the ancient town of Lamu and paddled its warm coastline.

The concept of safari was developed in Kenya and stories of the legendary plains and vast number of animals first reached western ears in the mid 1800s, placing Kenya firmly on the map as the premier safari destination.  Development of wildlife destinations in other African countries and recent political upheaval has removed some of the shine, but the country has maintained its status in the imagination of travellers worldwide, attracting millions of visitors every year and making tourism the linchpin of Kenya’s economy.  This has its downside in that many areas are often over-crowded, so that the search for that unique wilderness experience becomes a labour of love, but it has also resulted in a very comfortably established tourism infrastructure
