Rwanda

This is the newest African country to be included in the Active Africa portfolio and is well and truly wedged under our skin. Our guides lead walking tours throughout the land of a thousand hills with a strong emphasis on making that cultural connection, an unavoidable part of exploration on foot in a country where almost every family farms the hillsides. Of course the gorillas play a starring role in all walking itineraries, while the abundant smaller primates provide many good reasons to explore the southern forests as well.

Rwanda first achieved notoriety with the near-decimation of its mountain gorillas and the subsequent brutal murder of outspoken activist, Dian Fossey. More recently, the 1994 genocide, which achieved the quickest rate of killing recorded in recent history, etched the country firmly into the western mind. The social and economic repair that has occurred since, is nothing short of miraculous. The capital city, Kigali is frenetic with growth and renovation, education is a key focal area of the government and the booming tourism industry is gaining momentum each year.
